Can I ask you something?
Have you ever sat in a meeting, listened to someone compliment your work, and thought to yourself: "If they only knew the real me, they'd realize I have no idea what I'm doing"?
Or maybe you've hesitated to put yourself out there—to launch that program, raise your prices, apply for that grant—because a voice in your head keeps whispering: "Who do you think you are?"
Yeah, me too.
Today we're talking about a silent but powerful adversary that plagues so many talented, called, gifted women in our She Steps Forward community: imposter syndrome.
The Imposter in the Mirror
Let's start with imposter syndrome because it's sneaky. It doesn't announce itself. It just quietly convinces you that you're not as competent as others perceive you to be, and that you've somehow fooled everyone into thinking you're more capable than you actually are.
Sound familiar?
You look around at other entrepreneurs who seem to have it all together—polished websites, confident social media presence, impressive client rosters—and you think: "I'm just faking it until I make it. Eventually, everyone's going to figure out I don't belong here."
But can I tell you what the Bible says about your worth and calling?
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Read that again slowly.
You are not an accident. You are not an imposter. You are God's handiwork—His masterpiece—intentionally crafted for specific purposes that He prepared in advance for YOU to do.
The work you're doing? God saw it coming before you were even born. He equipped you for it. He called you to it. And He's not in the business of making mistakes.
When God Calls the 'Unqualified'
I love the story of Moses because it's the ultimate example of imposter syndrome meeting God's calling.
When God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt—arguably one of the biggest leadership assignments in history—Moses' response was basically: "Um, no thanks. I'm not eloquent. I'm slow of speech. Pick someone else."
In Exodus 4:10-12, Moses says, "Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent... I am slow of speech and tongue."
And God's response? "Who gave human beings their mouths?... Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."
Did you catch that? God didn't say, "You're right, Moses. You're not qualified. Let me find someone better."
He said, "I MADE you. I know what you can do. Now GO. I'll help you."
Friend, the same God who equipped Moses is equipping you.
Like Moses, you may feel inadequate. But God promises to equip you for the tasks He's called you to. Your feelings of inadequacy don't disqualify you—they position you to rely on His strength instead of your own.
Here's something that might surprise you: Feeling like an imposter doesn't mean you are one.
In fact, it often indicates that you're stretching yourself and growing. You're doing something new, something challenging, something that requires you to step out of your comfort zone. That's not imposter syndrome—that's courage in action.
Second Corinthians 3:5 puts it perfectly: "Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God."
Your competence comes from God. Not from your resume. Not from your credentials. Not from how confident you feel on any given day.
Overcoming the Imposter Lies
So how do we practically overcome imposter syndrome and step confidently into our roles as Kingdom entrepreneurs?
First, ground your identity in Christ. Your worth is not in your achievements or others' opinions. It's in being a beloved child of God. That identity doesn't change whether you land the client or lose the client, whether you hit your revenue goal or fall short.
Second, acknowledge your God-given talents. Stop dismissing your gifts as "no big deal" or "just something I'm good at." Romans 12:6 says: "Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them." Your talents are assignments from God. Recognize them. Appreciate them. Steward them well.
Third, embrace a growth mindset. View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than as tests that might expose you as a fraud. Every challenge is teaching you something you'll need for the next level.
Fourth, keep a 'wins' journal. Document your successes, positive feedback, testimonials, and lessons learned. When doubt creeps in (and it will), review this journal. Let past evidence of God's faithfulness anchor your present uncertainty.
Fifth, share your struggles. Open up to trusted friends or mentors about these feelings. You'll likely discover you're not alone. Some of the most successful women you admire have battled the same thoughts.
Sixth, focus on serving others. Shift your focus from your own perceived inadequacies to how your business, ministry, or nonprofit can serve and bless others. When you're mission-focused instead of self-focused, imposter syndrome loses its grip.
Seventh, practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend struggling with self-doubt. You wouldn't tell your friend she's a fraud—so stop telling yourself that.
Friend, you have been called and equipped by God for this entrepreneurial journey. It's time to embrace it wholeheartedly.
You're Not an Imposter, World Changer
Friend, let me speak truth over you today.
You are not an imposter.
You are a daughter of the King, called and equipped for the good works He has prepared for you—including your entrepreneurial journey.
The feelings of inadequacy? They're normal, but they're not truth.
What IS true? You are God's handiwork. You are equipped with power, love, and a sound mind. You are called. You are capable. And most importantly, you are not alone.
God is with you every step of the way. He doesn't call you to something and then abandon you to figure it out alone. He partners with you. He equips you. He opens doors. He works ALL things for your good.
So today, I'm challenging you: Stop letting imposter syndrome keep you small.
Step into the calling God has placed on your life with confidence—not confidence in yourself alone, but
confidence in the One who called you.
You were made for this, friend. Not to play small, but to step boldly into everything God has called you to do.
Reflect & Apply
1. In what specific situations do you most often feel like an imposter? Is it when you're marketing yourself? Networking? Setting prices? Bring these specific feelings to God in prayer today.
2. What are three of your God-given strengths or accomplishments that counter your imposter syndrome feelings? How have these contributed to your entrepreneurial venture? Write them down and keep them visible.
3. How might your imposter syndrome feelings actually be holding you back from fully serving others? What could change if you embraced your competence and calling?
Your answers matter. This isn't just reflection—it's the strategic spiritual work that silences the lies and builds the confidence foundation you need to step boldly into your calling.
